28 Luglio 2025

At dawn, we set off for Rome as pilgrims of hope, passing through the Holy Door of St Peter’s Basilica. We held a Eucharistic celebration in the Choir Chapel, which was presided over by Cardinal Mauro Gambetti. During his homily, he shared a dream with us: that experiences of fraternity would flourish where the focus is on relationships with Jesus, with one another, and with the people we encounter, rather than on rules to follow or tasks to accomplish. We should strive to make our fraternities as good as those that Francis had in mind. In his ideal, the world itself would be the cloister, and the missionary tension would be expressed by blending with those we meet along the way. These people could be encountered at work, at people’s doors, or in existential peripheries. He also hopes that our convents might resemble family homes in terms of their style of life. In such a setting, each person contributes to the life of the community according to their abilities, even when they are ill. Everyone participates in decision-making and planning, bringing their own characteristics and roles to the process. He concluded by saying that this way of living a consecrated life is attractive and that he wishes for us to truly be “artisans of hope for a culture of communion”.

We began the day with the Liturgy of the Hours followed by the Eucharist. We are reminded by Don Mario that we are called to be a prophetic sign of fraternity, especially in such a fragmented world. He urges us not to be afraid to laugh and cry together and to engage in honest and charitable dialogue. True fraternity is not the absence of conflict, but the capacity to endure it with love. He continues: “Go, dear sisters, and carry this word in your hearts and communities. The Lord is always with you. Remember the persistent friend, and don’t be afraid to knock again and again at His door if you need to. He will not disappoint.”
We then gathered in assembly and, after approving some minutes, we welcomed the new General Treasurer, who (not being a Chapter sister) joined us as soon as possible. We spent the day in assembly working on the final definition and approval of the Chapter Document, which contains the guidelines for our life and mission for the next six years.
During dinner, we took the opportunity to thank the sisters of the Casa Madre community for taking care of us in so many ways over the past few days. We also thanked Don Mario for his professional and fraternal guidance throughout this difficult journey.
We conclude our XVI General Chapter with a moment of prayer, praise and thanksgiving, and also remember our sisters who have preceded us in the kingdom of heaven. We received the Charter of Values of our Institute as a mandate. Afterwards, we enjoyed a fraternal gathering, exchanging small gifts from all our communities.

Today, on the memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, we began the day with the Morning prayer followed by Mass presided over by the Vicar General of the Diocese of Assisi, Fr. Giovanni Zampa, as Mother General introducendo him at the beginning of the Eucharistic celebration. She thanked Fr. Giovanni for his presence among us, a sign of our bond with the local church, and especially with the Church of Assisi.
Fr. Giovanni, in his homily, reminded us that, the first thing we must do in a Chapter is an act of faith, that is, to believe that the Lord has sown the good seed, has made good choices, has given his Spirit, and has manifested his Providence. What we have experienced is a good reality, and this is the first piece of good news. The second piece of good news comes from the Book of Exodus, in which the Lord paid for the good seed with his blood. In the Old Testament, it was the blood of a goat, but in the New Testament, God paid for the good seed with the blood of his Son. At this point in the Chapter, there is the risk of weeds. The Gospel says that weeds were sown in the night. This can also happen to us, who, after so much work and effort, can run the risk of letting ourselves be overcome by fatigue and “fall asleep.” Thus, we “profane” the good the Lord has done for us during this Chapter. The memory of Saints Joachim and Anne reminds us of our ancestors and, in particular, that if we are here today, it is because our Founders and our sisters who preceded us. Therefore, out of respect for them and our charism, we cannot “fall asleep.” Fr. Giovanni reminds us that God precedes us, accompanies us, and follows us. Furthermore, he thanked the Lord for the good He is doing through us.
The day was entirely dedicated to group work for the increasingly precise definition of the Chapter Document.

On the Feast of St James the Apostle, we began the day with Lauds and a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Don Mario. We realise that, just as it has always been the case, the Word accompanies the journey we are making today.
“I have chosen you,” says the Lord, “that you may go and bear fruit, and that your fruit will remain.” But when faced with those who want to be first, Jesus is very clear that if anyone wants to be first, he must be your servant, and if anyone wants to be great, he must be a slave. This is a clear criterion for those in positions of authority: to serve others rather than themselves. We must remember that we are fragile and vulnerable, and that we carry a “treasure in earthen vessels”, as today’s first reading reminds us. We are troubled, crushed, shocked but not despaired, persecuted but not abandoned, struck in body and soul but not destroyed. The message is one of great hope for all who must carry out the mission. We must ask ourselves: how am I manifesting Jesus in my choices, decisions and attitudes? Our mission must be inspired by the spirit of faith. Nothing happens by chance; God guides us. It is up to us to respond to the gift we have received. Don Mario hopes that we can complete the work we have begun with serenity, peace, transparency and truth in the presence of the Lord Jesus. In order to achieve this, we must listen to the Lord so that he may guide our actions with his words.
In the morning, we resumed our group work, seeking to outline the guidelines for the new six-year term with increasing precision. In the afternoon, we approved the previous days’ minutes and continued working on the redesign.

On the feast of Saint Bridget, we began the day with Morning Prayer and the celebration of the Eucharist. In his homily, Don Mario points out that when we say “yes” in our youth, we risk becoming overconfident. Today’s reading calls us to reflect deeply on our consecrated life. This is a life that carries within it the awareness of Christ’s presence within us, and this awareness must be constant because, without Him, we can do nothing. As God is the master of our lives, only He can cut, prune and burn His branches. As disciples, we must be aware that we are all united to the vine from which we receive our lifeblood. Therefore, communion is essential for discipleship. “My” personal communion is not mine alone if it is also “ours”: we are one body in Him. Jesus reminds us of this in the Gospel: “Anyone who does not remain within me is like a branch that has been cut off, and they wither and are thrown into the fire, where they are burned.” But if we remain in Him, we can ask anything and it will be granted. What fruit can we bear if we abide in Him? It is love, capable of overcoming partiality and division. Indeed, discernment requires us to seek God’s will in union with Christ. Paul tells the Galatians, “I have been crucified with Christ.” Crucifixion presupposes denying our own will, accepting that it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. This does not mean renouncing our will, but strengthening our being with Christ’s being and His strength. Today’s liturgy speaks volumes to us at this moment in the chapter that we are celebrating. It reminds us that we are all one body in Christ. Without Christ, we can achieve nothing! May the Lord help us to understand and embrace His word deeply, and to bear the fruit He expects! Encouraged by this word, we spent the morning in assembly, approving the minutes and sharing yesterday’s group work. We concluded the morning by closing the Second Session of the Chapter and opening the Third Session, which included a period of discernment for electing the new Superior General, her Council and the General Treasurer, followed by the subsequent elections. In the afternoon, Don Mario introduced us to the process of discernment, providing guidance and leading us in prayer. Then each sister had time for her own prayer and adoration until evening prayer, and that was how we wrapped up the day.

On the Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene, we began the day with Morning Prayer and then celebrated the Eucharist. Although Mary Magdalene has caused much debate among theologians and biblical scholars, one thing is clear: she learned to seek Jesus! Indeed, in today’s Gospel, Jesus himself asks her: “Whom are you looking for? Today we must seek God’s will. We must do this in everything we do and say in our Institute. In our profound relationship with the Lord, we are called to bear witness to the resurrection that transcends all worldly interests and concerns. Mary Magdalene wept for what was missing; we too should mourn when the Lord is absent from our journey. As consecrated women, we are placed in the Church as witnesses to the search for the Risen One. Like the bride in the Song of Songs, each of us should seek the Lord’s will with intensity. Encouraged by this word, we started the chapter work with a moment of personal reflection. We then met in assembly to approve the minutes and receive instructions on how to proceed with the group work on the Working Document and the topics identified thus far. In the early afternoon, we met again to vote on guidelines for some general services. We carried on working in groups and finished the day with evening prayer.

21 Luglio 2025

Our day began with Morning Prayer and the celebration of the Eucharist. Father Mario breaks down the readings for us, pointing out that during these days of the Chapter, the Word is truly accompanying and guiding us on the path we must take. In the first reading, we hear how the Israelites, upon reaching the Red Sea and realising that the Egyptians are following them, began to complain to Moses. Our wounds, habits and preconceptions often cause us to panic when faced with a multitude of decisions. We fear both the past and the future. Sometimes, when we lack courage, we succumb to fear. We must abandon our certainties and trust in God so that we can walk towards a new haven. In today’s homily, Don Mario concludes: “Have faith! the Lord is guiding you; lift your staff like Moses and open your heart!” This is what we tried to do this morning and early afternoon: continue our work on redesigning the assembly. We then shared the work by themes, based on the initial reports from the various entities that we had carried out as a group in previous days.

20 Luglio 2025

On the 16th Sunday of Ordinary Time, we began the day with a Eucharistic celebration combined with Morning Prayer. During the homily, Fr. Mario reminded us that, with the intimacy that friendship allows, Martha could say to Jesus, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?” “Tell her to help me.” Through his response, Jesus shows us that hospitality is not so much about “doing”, but about welcoming; not so much about activity, but about brotherhood. This concept is very close to us: we may worry and be anxious about many things, but the most important thing is the one that leads us to intimacy with the Lord. In the second reading, Paul expresses his joy in his own suffering, which he sees as completing the sufferings of Christ for the sake of his body, the Church. Sometimes, suffering is moral and spiritual, preventing us from grasping God’s call. However, the Lord guides our steps, so there’s no need to worry. He will teach us which path to choose, which route to take and how to approach the mission. “Blessed are those who keep the word of God in a pure and wholehearted way and bear fruit through perseverance”: perseverance and courage are needed for the journey ahead of us, which is free from worry and agitation and filled with intimacy with the Lord. Accompanied by this word, we continued our work on the concrete redesign proposal through in-depth study and discussion during the assembly. Father Aitor accompanied us during the morning and Father Mario during the afternoon. The day concluded with Evening Prayer.

We begin our day with the Morning Prayer followed by the Eucharist celebration presided by Fr Aitor. Today’s Gospel speaks of the persecution of Jesus and the attempts to eliminate him. Jesus’ teachings were inconvenient for the society in which he was born and preached the Good News. All too often, we find ourselves in a similar position to that described in today’s Gospel: even though we know what Jesus says, we make excuses for not doing the Father’s will. We do not recognise what we dislike, but seek other ways, denying its salvific value. “Let it not be so among you,” says Jesus. This requires constant conversion in the search for truth and for what God wants for us. When faced with negative attitudes, Jesus responds with disarming peace. It is up to us not to extinguish the light that comes from God. The Lord tells us, ‘I am with you,’ and this becomes apparent when we follow Jesus’ example. We can be at peace with ourselves and accept that Jesus is the Son of God when we realise that the newness He will present to us today is not for our destruction but for our abundant life.
Inspired by this Word, we worked individually and in groups on a concrete redesign proposal in the morning. In the afternoon, we presented the results of the group work to the assembly. At dinner, we commemorated the 21st anniversary of the opening of the mission in Indonesia.

18 Luglio 2025

We begin the day with the Morning Prayer followed by Holy Mass. The Word accompanies us step by step on our journey. Today there are many insights we can draw, helped by Don Mario who explains the Word to us every day.
In the first reading, the celebration of Easter is recounted in detail. We must not forget that it was the Lord who chose Moses. It is the Lord who will choose our authority, beyond all human logic. The first reading provides a detailed account of the celebration of the Passover. We must not forget that it was the Lord who chose Moses. It is the Lord who will appoint our leaders, regardless of human logic. However, to free ourselves, we must work hard. In his first encyclical, Pope Francis states that we remain like “generals of defeated armies, sick of what we must do”. If we want to free ourselves from what enslaves us, the goals we set ourselves must be concrete and grounded in reality. However, we must have the courage to abandon our certainties. Easter demands that we drink the cup of salvation. The blood of the Lamb sets us free. Who can establish a united community? In the Gospel, those who do not keep the law are criticised. The idea of a love that overcomes the law can sometimes seem very distant to us. Jesus refers to the word of God to highlight how the law can sometimes clash with practice and divine inspiration. Often, it is our own ideas and preconceptions that hold us back, and these are things we need to overcome. “I want mercy, not sacrifices”: mercy fills the heart with joy. The General Chapter is an act of mercy, both for us and for others. The people left with only the essentials. We must remember this: keep the essentials.
Today’s work began with a sharing of the group work from the previous days in the assembly. During this time, we identified the challenges, perspectives and processes that we are called to face in view of the future and the redesigning of our Institute. In the afternoon, we worked in groups again, categorising the themes that had emerged from the morning’s discussion. Later on, we welcomed Fr. Aitor Jiménez Echave CMF, who introduced the first part of the redesign work process.

We begin the day with Morning Prayer and then Holy Mass. Fr Mario, taking up the readings, invites us to reflect on our call. Moses had a story behind him — as we all do. Moses encounters the Lord in his daily life, in a bush that burns but does not consume. He approaches, but God invites him to stop. How often does God invite us to remove our sandals and approach him in our vulnerability? It is there that God reveals himself to us. Sometimes, we experience the distance between the mission to which God calls us and our current situation; between who we are and our past. God comes close to assure us of his presence. In the Gospel, we read that Jesus looked at his disciples and saw something great in their hearts. The call is a sign of God’s benevolence, which must be fulfilled despite our vulnerability and weakness. All of this touches our lives. We are here today to gain a better understanding of our mission and to ascend our own Horeb and tell the Lord: Here I am!
Today, we attempted to achieve this by listening to various reports, including those from the Secretariat for Missions, the General Treasurer, the Safeguarding, which is part of Mother General’s Report.

On the Feast of St Bonaventure, we begin the day with Morning Prayer and a Eucharistic celebration in various languages. In his homily, Father Mario reminds us that wisdom is loved by the Lord and that it is wisdom itself that discerns the works of God. We must enter into His heart to discern His will. In the Gospel, the Lord reminds us that we are already the salt of the earth and the light of the world, and that we must not lose this status. As a missionary institute, we must ensure that we do not lose this flavour, and that we continue to burn as a light in the world, proclaiming Jesus. On this day, we dedicated the morning to listening to the reports of the Korean Province (also present in Indonesia, the Philippines, China, and Vietnam), the Romanian Province (also present in Italy, San Marino, Germany, and Moldova), and the Italian Province. In the afternoon, after work and personal prayer, we met again in groups and then in assembly to share what had emerged.
We concluded the day with Vespers.

We began the day with Morning Prayer, followed by Mass presided over by Fr. Mario Llanos SDB, who will be our facilitator throughout the Chapter. Delivering the homily, he exhorted us to walk in freedom. He also reminded us that, as Franciscans, we are called to free ourselves from any interests that would make us rich and prevent us from being poor in spirit. Referring to the words of the Gospel, Fr. Mario reminded us of the words of Jesus: ‘Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.’ He poses two challenging questions: how should our Institute shed certain aspects of its identity, and which aspects of Jesus Christ should we embrace more firmly?Today, we began the second session of the Chapter, which included presentations from the Provinces of Zambia, Kenya and Malawi, the Vice-Province of the United States and the Province of Brazil. The listening session was followed by personal reflection and prayer, and then group work and a final sharing session in the assembly.
The day concluded with Evening prayer.

– la Segretaria del Capitolo;
– le due Scrutatrici;

Sunday, 15th of Ordinary time, we spent the morning in personal prayer and Mass. Each sister organised her time as she wished and chose where to celebrate the Eucharist in various Franciscan sanctuaries.
At 15:30, we gathered in the Chapter Hall for the First Session of the Chapter. This began with a prayer, followed by an introductory address from the Mother General, Sr. Francesca Farina, who is presiding over the Chapter. We then proceeded with the roll call of the sisters present, bearing in mind that we are here because the Lord has called us by name to this service. By secret ballot, we elected:
– the Chapter Secretary;
– the two Scrutineers;
– the four Examiners.
Following the election, the sisters who had accepted the assignment confirmed their commitment. We concluded the First Session with the Secretary announcing the Second Session of the Chapter for the next day.

We began the day with the Morning prayer followed by Mass, which was presided by Fr. Riccardo Giacon, OFM Conv., who, breaking the Word for us, encouraged us not to fear to face life’s difficulties and challenges. He reminded us to let God act and not to put ourselves in His place, then God will bring good out of evil and lead us beyond our present and future fears without allowing ourselves to be held back by the past. Jesus asks us to engage in a unique and full relationship of communion with Him and not to be mere executors of His commands. Communion will guarantee our courage to follow His teachings and will awaken hope within us even in the face of failure, risk, and persecution.
During this day, we continued to deepen the theme of interculturality with Sr. Paola Jordão, FMDV, through group work, sharing, and listening. We began from the concrete experience of our own realities, then we reflected on Jesus’ intercultural journey by meditating on the passage of the Canaanite woman (Mt 15:21-28) in a time of personal prayer until Vespers.

On the feast of Saint Benedict, we began the day with the Morning prayer in the Chapel of our Motherhouse, followed by Mass presided over by the Custos of the Sacred Convent of Assisi, Fr. Marco Moroni, OFM Conv. As a brother, he shared the Word for us, exhorting us to “open our ears to wisdom,
and incline our hearts to prudence. ” As Saint Francis said: ” keep nothing of yourselves for yourselves, so that He who offers Himself completely to you may welcome you all entirely” (FF 221).
On this first day, Sr. Paola Jordão fmdv introduced us to the theme of Interculturality through group dynamics and reflection in the chapter room, which helped us savor the joy of being together and the beauty of the cultural diversity that characterizes us. The day concluded with the Evening prayer.
